Has anyone seen the Golden Compass?!

Question: If so - can you explain this to me. My son's friend (they're both 6) said if you want to see the Golden Compass you hate God. I understand this is probably a comment the child heard from his parents - misconstrued then uttered from a child's perspective, but if you've seen this movie can you let me know if it has any religious undertones. Also - can you let me know if it is an appropriate movie for a 6 (going on 7) year old to see.

no 7 yr old will understand the religious connotations the ADULTS keep bickering about. Kids will think its cool when the bears fight.

that being said, The author of golden compass said this:

"I'm trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief," said Pullman in an article by The Washington Post, adding that C.S. Lewis, the Christian author of Chronicles of Narnia, would describe his books as the “Devil's work."

Not I. Sorry I cannot help.

I read somewhere that people were boycotting the movie becuz nicole kidman's character trys to get the kids to kill god :O

Oh, please... it's just more silly nonsense that silly people continue to regurgitate.

It's a work of fiction. Plain and simple.

If religious people are going to be SO upset about a work of fiction that should clue you in about how "strong" their faith really is.

the movie has not religious undertones...any undertones that the books had was taken out. and yes it is appropriate, just one part is a little edge and that is where the polar bears fight.
the people that are boy coting the movie didnt bother to watch the movie or read the books, and are just doing it for attention, so do not worry about it
plus it is a personal decision on if you see the movie or not. but when i saw it a lot of kids was in the audience and they seems to enjoy it very much

good luck with your decision

note: Elissa ^-^ ,there are a lot of movies where witches are good guys...and the demons are not typcial deamons....wonders if you even bothered to watch the movie or read the book

I wouldn't want my kids to see it, no. It makes the demons and witches appear to be the good guys, and the people all dressed in white the bad guys. Seriously wtf you know?

I saw it,and liked it.It does have Religious undertones. The villains resemble priests their organization is church like.I don't recall any God references. It's a stretch calling it anti-religion.It's inappropriate for anyone under 10 in my opinion. For violence and frightening scenes.Kids will only see it as anti God if silly adults convince them it is.

there are religious things mentioned, but not directly called.

like one character says "our ancestors defied the authority," which hints to adam and eve

the movie is worth seeing despite all of this

and it is probably not right for kids that young, because i had to explain it to my 14 year old cousin

though they may just see it as a movie with shape shifting animals, giant bears, and cool witches

all children should see this movie. It teaches children to think for themselves, to trust their intuition and not be manipulated by religious organizations that want to manipulate and control entire populations. If you want your child to grow up autonomous, intelligent and to have the ability to think for themselves then you owe it to them to let them see this movie. Be careful of institutions with too much control and power it's very scary.

It amazes me at Hollywood never passes up a chance to take a sidelong crack at Christianity and particularly Catholicism. (I'm not catholic) This is just yet another case of that, nothing direct, just yet another in a constant tactic to in a million little ways create a negative attitude toward the christian religion.

All of this went way beyond the book, fans of the book will be surprised at how much of the story was changed.

They are not trying to kill God they are trying to split the children and their "souls" (which is portrayed as animals) up so they can grow up faster because I guess their souls are attracting a particle that their equivalence of a church (forgot what its called) is trying to say it doesn't exist so they don't lose control...it is not a God hating movie, it was just written by an atheist author (apparently) AND! I really suggest not to let the little ones go see it, here the theatres said it is "Not Recommended For Young Children" =)
