Alright, in the movie it is left rather ambiguous.. you just can't tell..
However, in the book they lead you to believe that it is a case of both insanity AND alien.. Basically, the guy goes nuts.. and his body is taken over by an alien mind.. so, he IS an alien, but his body is still human.. and they switch back and forth..
dont bother man. if was an alien they would have told you. but he's really just a freaky crazy dude with "issuses" the movie kinda sucked in my opinion.
I'm not really a fan of the movie either, but the best way to put it is that he was sort of "possessed" by an alien. It's never explicitly stated, but at the end, Spacey's character is still there, and the next deserving host is conspicuously missing.
It's been a while since I've seen the movie, but that is one thing I really liked about it: The movie doesn't really tell you. It left the ending open for you to decide if he was an alien or not.
The rest of movie, though, I give a 3 (on a scale of 1 to 5). If the movie is on, and I have nothing else to do, and there is nothing else on, I'll watch it. Otherwise, I'll skip it.
The movie sucked and he was just another crazy person. Interesting fact though the scene where Kevin Spacey was eating the banana whole along with the skin. That was real because the fake ones were melting under the film lighting and because they did numerous takes Spacey over dosed on the potassium that is in the banana skin, you can hear this on the dvd Commentary

Like Prez. Bush the movie sucked major c0ck.
I made it about fifteen minutes into the movie...Lost a little respect for Spacey and Bridges in that one.
