Considering I post (or used to post) a lot on Oscar Buzz/Oscar Watch here's the general consensus:
'Atonement'-- It's right up the academy's alley.
'Juno'--It appears to be the feel-good movie of the year, and the Academy appears to have made steps in recent years towards nominating off-beat, quirky 'indie movies.'
'No Country for Old Men'-- proven directors and cast. It's the most critically acclaimed film of the year; the only problem being that the AMPAS members tend to be less responsive towards these types of films.
And those are the locks, I'd say.
Here are the "contenders" for the 2 other slots:
"Sweeney Todd"-- I had doubts about Burton's film being able to gain enough steam, but Johnny Depp still has the "overdue" tag attached to his name and this film has been heavily awarded in critic association rewards.
"There Will Be Blood"--two under appreciated men--Daniel Day-Lewis and PT Anderson--and a film that's actually beat out the "locks" for many, many awards this season (New York Film Critics being a big one)
"In the Valley of Elah" -- It's Paul Haggis. And the studio can campaign around that alone. Ah.
"Diving Bell and the Butterfly" -- great reviews, a foreign feature (the academy likes to make itself be perceived as diverse)
"Michael Clayton"-- George Clooney's love (have you seen all the accolades he's picked up this year?) might single-handedly carry this film to a nomination.
Wow, Sweeney Todd, Atonement, Charlie Wilson's War, No country for Old Men; Why? Johnny Depp, the story, Tom Hanks, The ensemble.
For # 5, who knows?
