The PREMISE of the rock-opera "Jesus Christ - Superstar" is that Jesus, the Man, became Jesus, the Christ, as a product of his devotes enthusiasm; that he then started believing his own publicity. The plot investigates the Divinity or Jesus Christ.

It's PERSPECTIVE is not from Jesus himself, but that of His friend, colleague and follower Judas:
"... Jesus! You've started to believe, the things they say of you.
You really do believe, this talk of God is true.
And all the good you've done, will soon get swept away.
You've begun to matter more than the things you say..."

:, and (or versus?) his hard-to-convince, jaded "believer" Mary Magdalene:
"... Yet, if he said he loved me, I'd be lost. I'd be frightened.
I couldn't cope, just couldn't cope. I'd turn my head.
I'd back away. I wouldn't want to know.
He scares me so. I want him so. I love him so."

So, I believe the THEME of "JCSuperstar" is DOUBT.

And Not whether you or I (or Judas or Mary) ever doubted Jesus' divinity, but whether HE ever doubted His Own divinity. This is where religious critics see the blasphemy. This is, by his own admission, where Andrew Lloyd Webber was coming from when he wrote the libretto. And he carried this Divine Doubt theme right up to to the last two lines of the opera... and then left us All hanging... wondering... at...

The Crucifiction: Jesus speaks from the cross,
quoting (or rather, artistically paraphrasing) from scripture,

"Father, forgive them. They don't know what they're doing.
Father, into your hands I commend my spirit."

(sigh.) (such is art.)

Judas challenging Jesus.

Basically, the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ, with a hippy twist.

Have you watched the movie ? ???
Its been awhile since I have - the music is great - by
Andrew Lloyd Webber.
If I remember right - Jesus teachings and the relationship he has with his disciples ( entourage if you will) and the questioning of his purpose during his ministry.
In the song -
Jesus Christ, super star - who are you going to sacrifice ?
leads to the question of who is being sacrifice - Jesus, the man and the teacher, or the son of god ?
My best advice is to watch and listen to the movie again - its been awhile since I have.

It humanises Jesus, makes Judas sympathetic, and deals with the complexities of anger, devotion, and spirituality.

On a deeper level, it also addresses how the church has overshadowed the true teachings of Christ. Judas becomes alienated mostly as Jesus' popularity grows, and he is becoming more diefied than listened to. As the line he sings states, "No talk of 'God' then we called you a Man". Christ himself becomes increasingly annoyed and confused about the 'adoration' his followers show. Eventually, it is the shifting of focus from his teachings to his divinity that is his undoing. It is the reason the Faracies (sp) seek to have him executed.

If there is a true 'theme' other than the passion play itself, that would be it. How the focus on Christ as God and the power of the Church distracts from his true message, and alienates some otherwise well intentioned people.
