How do you become a film critic and get into free screenings?!

Question: I'm a film fanatic and love movies with a passion. I don't want to be a big time film critic like Roger Ebert or anything like that, but it would be nice to get into early screenings to review films locally. There are people on Youtube who get into these screenings, most who don't even go to film school etc. Just average people who love movies and review them.

I'm curently attending University studying psychology, haven't tooken film or wiring classes. But people tell me I'm a great writer better than most, and I have a passion for films. I'd love to get into free screenings to review movies, maybe for a local newspaper or start my own review site or something of that nature. What steps would I have to do to get into these screenings?

Don't give answers like contact a big film critic or something like that. Anyone familiar with film critics and these free screenings. It would save money to review films. Wha tsteps do I need to take? Thanks and have a great holiday season!

Hey! I am a film major at ASU and honestly becoming a film critic for any sort of magazine or newspaper requires you to have some sort of degree in the area of film and media studies...I am a film production major, so that's different. But, what you got to do is at least take some none-major film classes that just talk about movies because those certainly open your eyes because movies are so much more than you think before taking these classes. I have learned so much about things that go on in a single second of a movie that I wouldn't without taking courses.

That is a big deal for newspapers because they want people to make sense and know what they are talking about. I don't know if you just want to get into movies so you can review them your self or not, but people get movie passes from advertising companies. A very big advertising company for movies in particular is Allied Advertising which has many many promotional and critical screenings of films at different places throughout the USA. You either start with internships for them to get into movies to get behind every single movie, learn more and build up your resume (even to apply for movie critic job for a newspaper), or you can find places where they distribute these passes. I know you need to have professional level literature knowledge and watch the best of the best movies that have been made in all history.

Look into these classes (i know you still have some time to register for classes for Spring '08), pick an elective, and see if you can do it...then who knows, maybe you'll even minor in media studies.

What I'm trying to say is, watch as many movies as you can...even those that you don't think you'll like...watch foreign films to open your eyes...then take some elective film classes to know more and more about the subject and specifics...and then start building up resumes and internships...and yes, a movie reviewing website can help you out alot!

Good luck! Hope you'll review one of my films in the future
