Because you know that page of Wilks Booth's diary that the Wilkinson guy had? Well, he claimed that that page said that Ben Gate's (nickolas cage) great great grandfather was an assasign (sp.?) in the assassination of President Lincoln, which tarnishes the family name of the Gates.
But Ben Gates claimed that the page of the diary was not a list of assassins, it was a treasure map to the City of Gold.
So if he found the City of Gold, because of the page of the diary, it proves it was a map, not a list of assassins.
And he did find the city, so it proves that the page of the diary was a clue or a map or whatever to the city, so his great great grandfather was NOT an assassin.
Sorry if that wasn't all too clear, idk how else to explain it....
