I just saw Sweeny Todd with Johnny Depp. I saw the Broadway play and liked it mu!

Question: The play had more humor and light moments- it seemed that the movie had no relationship between the sailor and Joanna, and left out some of the Barber's most interesting and sometimes humorous lines.
What is your opinion?

You're right, the film adaptation had a much darker mood... and yes, they dramatically downplayed the romantic relationship between Johanna and Anthony. Burton said he wanted to make it much more about Sweeney and his murderous madness, so he cut a lot of the "young lovers" storyline.

I don't think they cut TOO many humorous lines. They did cut about half of "A Little Priest" and it was a little sad knowing they weren't there, but to be honest, I totally understand the cut. This was MEANT to be a much grimmer interpretation of the story, so the "nudge-nudge, wink-wink" humor of those lines wouldn't've worked.

My opinion is that both the film and the play are beautiful the way they are. They shouldn't be anything but exactly the way we've seen them.
