Saw it Sunday and it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. You really need to see it if at all possible.
It's about a barber, Benjamin Barker, who is married to a beautiful wife and has a baby daughter, Johanna. Judge Turpin sees the wife and wants her, so he convicts Benjamin to an Australian prison on false charges, rapes the wife, and raises Johanna as his own.
Benjamin escapes and is rescued at sea by sailor Anthony and they return to London. They are met at the dock by a crazy old beggar lady (who is a prostitute on the stage version), Anthony gives her a coin. Benjamin tells Anthony that he is going to Fleet Street and maybe they will meet again.
BB (now known as Sweeny Todd) returns to his old shop on Fleet Street. His landlady, Nellie Lovett, runs the "worst pie shop in London", takes him to his old shop, which is now in ruins, and returns his razors to him. She tells him his wife poisoned herself and he swears to get vengeance on Turpin. He adds a chute to his barber chair, which leads to the cellar, and this is how he disposes of the bodies.
Sweeney demonstrates he is the best barber on Fleet Street in a very funny contest against an Italian barber (Pinelli?), played by Sacha Baron Cohen. Pinelli comes to Sweeney's shop to blackmail him, as he recognizes Sweeney as Benjamin Barker. Sweeney kills him and Mrs. Lovett has the idea to use Pinelli as filling for her meat pies. Mrs. Lovett takes in Pinelli's worker boy, Toby, to help her and because she likes him.
Meanwhile, Anthony has seen Johanna in the window of Judge Turpin's house, the Judge beats him just for looking at Johanna, and he and Sweeney make plans to release Johanna, who throws the key down to Anthony.
Because he is the best barber on Fleet Street, Judge Turpin comes for a shave and they sing a beautiful duet (Pretty Women). Just as Sweeney is about to kill Turpin, Anthony bursts in and ruins the plan to free Johanna. Turpin says he will never return and Sweeney has a breakdown, singing "epiphany" and starts a rampage of murder. Because she will not marry him, Turpin sends Johanna away to the insane asylum.
The pie shop prospers (God, that's good!), prompting Mrs. Lovett to fantasize about a little trip to the sea w/Sweeney. The beggar lady from the first scene is haunting the pie shop, saying it smells badly, and Mrs. Lovett shoos her away. Complaints are starting to come in about the stink.
Sweeney and Anthony make another plan to free Johanna. Sweeney makes Judge Turpin believe he is on the Judge's side and kills him. Toby discovers the goings on and Mrs. Lovett locks him up in the cellar, where the big oven is and a pipe that leads to the sewer (to dispose of the blood, bones, etc).
Anthony helps Johanna to escape and disguises her as a boy. He leaves her in the barber shop while he goes to find Sweeney. She gets scared and hides in a big chest. The beggar lady goes into the barber shop and asks Sweeney, "Don't I know you?". He is afraid she knows too much and kills her. At that point he sees Johanna, disguised as a boy, is about to kill her, but Mrs. Lovett comes to get him to dispose of Toby. He tells Johanna to forget his face and leaves.
When Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett go to the cellar for Toby, there is no sign of him. SPOILER: Sweeney sees the body of the beggar woman and realizes - it's his wife! Mrs. Lovett tries to calm him down, as they dance through the cellar, but he throws her into the raging oven.
SPOILER: Sweeney drops his razor to the floor and is cradling his dead wife in his arms. Toby comes up out of a grate, takes the razor in hand, and slits Sweeney's throat. The End.
I WANT TO SEE IT TOO!!! i havent seen it, but from what i heard.. its good!
Why don't you just go see it or google it. It's a story of a murderous butcher. It's very famous, so many adaptations. I'm interested to see the movie.
he dies after killing so many people who come to his barbers chair. you can watch the movie through movieforumz.com. its fairly good quality.
