In I am Legend what is the stuff sprayed on the steps?!

Question: When Will Smith's character goes into his house at night he sprays a bottle of something all over the steps, then later when he is setting his trap to capture a "night seeker", he sprays it on his jacket. Did the movie ever explain what he was doing?

The vinegar answer is the closest.

The Vampires have a keen sense of smell, and was able to locate "food" like this. Will Smith knew this and would kill his tracks wherever he would either stay or go most often. In the book it was described as a smell that would detour anything and leave nothing.
It also said that it was something that he created, that had vinegar, urine, (for the ammonia) and baking soda. I understand why the director choose to leave this out of the film. This would take up time explaining something that was easily figured out when thought about.

I was wondering the saame thing! I hope someone knows.

It was probably bleach or something similar to kill his scent. I don't think the movie ever explains, but he is very cautious about not leading the night seekers back to his home, so it would make sense.

looks like ammonia to me. i know my dad used to put some on top of the garbage cans to keep the dogs away from the garbage overnight when he put it out to be collected the next day

That would be kerosine (lighter fluid). He was gonna burn the zombies if they got that close. I guess he was preparing to kill both himself and the zombie when he did it on his jacket. I think the movie just figured the audience would know what that is. When the zombies do attack his house later on though we see all his traps that he set for them and whe nthe explosion happened, that is when we saw the use of the kerosine.

Whereas he was immune to all strains of the virus, his dog was only immune to the airborne strain. Therefore, if any physical matter containing the virus made contact with his dog, the dog would be infected (which it eventually did). He sprayed his jacket after physically coming into contact with the creatures, and I believe the steps after bringing one home to safeguard his dog.

I believe it is vinegar or something similar to cover his "tracks" or his scent.

i've seen the movie and I wanna say it's a repellant of some sort...........like to mask the human scent or something that's my take on it....

I think he was going to destroy the zombies with it, i'm not completley sure I was wondering the same thing during the movie

:)

He didn't explain it but it was vinegar to keep them away, thats what I was told!
