alvin and the chipmunks may be a little too youthful for 12 year olds.
I would go with water horse. It is about a boy finds a dinosaur who turns out to be like the locke ness monster but a friendly non nissan truck spitting type but a shrecks donkeys wifes dragon kinda monster. LOL
