Do you think if Hollywood hadn't shown the 'magic' of movie-making..!

Question: ... we would be WAY MORE interested and more appreciative of movies?

I mean, it's like a magician revealing how he does his magic tricks. After you know the trick, it's not so much fun anymore!

I think that it would be more interesting and people would watch movies way more! We would probably think it was magic!

I've been saying that since the Seventies! They had all of these behind-the-scenes specials for "Star Wars" and "Jaws", and I thought it was a bad idea though I had to admit that it was fascinating. It does take away from the sense of wonder if you know how everything is done. Would anyone appreciate magicians and illusionists who detailed how they do it? Once you know how someone walks down a wall or makes the Statue of Liberty disappear and re-appear, who would care anymore?

I also don't think the gorefests would have grown to such horrible detail. It's because people figure that they can demand more and more nastiness and SFX/makeup guys will come up with it. BUT, since they know all of the tricks, the audience is still blase about it.

No wonder horror films don't frighten most people anymore. And, it infuriates me to hear them put down amazing films that had people in awe before. Now that they know the secrets, they try to tear apart such wonderful movies, not seeing them for the miracles they are!

Yes, I feel very strongly about this subject because I remembered how I felt growing up in the rebirth of science fiction, a decade filled with wonderful images. I remember being amazed by older films such as "King Kong". I was awestruck by "Jason & the Argonauts" when I saw it at the drive-in. My father and I discussed it, wondering about how they did all of those creatures. It was that much more remarkable a movie because we didn't have a clue about stop-motion and back projection. We had no idea how it was done, and I think that's the way it should be.

So, I agree with you and am happy to hear my concerns supported. But, once all the secrets are revealed, is there any way to go back? How about no longer watching all of those extras on DVDs I hear about. How about allowing children to find wonder in what they see? If they are frightened by it, THEN you can explain it's not real, right?

Deffinitly
Its like disney saying
'hey kids, wanna see how we made Ariel grow legs?"
It just takes the fun out of things

No, in fact you appreciate it better as to just how hard it is to make a film

I have seen Penn and Teller go though how the trick works, but they still pull it off is grace and pizzazz
