...you're describing the campy, low-budget 1978 sci-fi/horror flick "Laserblast", which starred Roddy McDowell, Keenan Wynn and Kim Milford ("Corvette Summer"); it was one of the first films produced by Charles Band, who would eventually form Empire Pictures ("Re-Animator", "From Beyond", etc.), and then conquer the video market, with Full Moon Pictures ("Trancers", "Puppet Master", "Subspecies", etc.)
