It all depends... there are examples of good filmmakers that didn't go to film school, and also of those filmmakers that have a career thanks to their time in film school...

I went to film school (in Spain) and i think it helped me in learning some aspects of film making, specially related to all the films i saw and all the books i read (i would have never read them in other circumstances), and also it gave an idea of the film industry as a business, you know, regarding budget and laws related to copyright.... but it didn't helped me a lot in film making in practice, like handling a camera for example, i learned that on my own...

The bottom line is: Film school will help you to learn stuff that is very important, but on the other hand the two things that matters when it comes to show-business is practice and connections, if you can get those, it doesn't matter if you went to film school, it also depends on how much you know already, if you are a beginner i would recommend going to film school, if you have already done some short films, and you know your stuff, then i would recommend all that time and effort in getting to know the right people and trying to push a film no matter what

Yes, by all means go to film school. I wish I had gone but now I'm too old.

Go now!

"Is it worth it?" depends upon what is important to you! :)

You need to follow your dreams, and at the same time fine a career that fulfills your purpose in life. Finding your purpose can be tricky, but if you look at your most important friendships, and your favorite activities, you will find some confluence between them all that will help you find it. It can be anything, so look carefully. A life-long career will only happen when you are fulfilling your ultimate self-purpose, while also following your dreams.

You can also find some good help by taking a 2 day career course from a local community college. It is a 1 unit class, and is silly easy. You go for 2 different Saturdays and they give you some questions to answer (which are actually quite fun to do), and by the end they give you a print out of the top 20 jobs (in order) that you would be fulfilled and satisfied by doing. My top three were dead on for what I have found strongly compelling in my life.

You want to know if it is worth the money, but honestly, it is a career that is so hit or miss! Yes, if you really want to make movies you will have to go to school, and that is because people don't want to invest money in people that haven't been trained, or who aren't already successful. For small movies you will have to find your own investors, and they aren't likely to give you money if you can't show them films you have made already (which you do in film school). Even if you are an editor of films, you still need the experience before anyone will trust you with their baby.

So.... make sure it is really what you want to do, and if so, then yes, you should go. It is worth the money if you actually want to make movies. But if you are going to go to school and then change your mind, that is another story. So really make sure it is for you before you invest in yourself in this way:)

No not if you hate movies.
