This video gives you a side look at the "beast" as it is walking between two buildings. This pretty much disproves the "Monster Manhattan" idea, though it was a creative one. They took this from the second trailer:

I think it's William Shatner.
He got all honked off because JJ Abrams (producer of both "Cloverfield" and the upcoming "Star Trek" movie) wouldn't cast him in the Star Trek movie, so he went postal on New York.
I have a suspision that they will go through the entire movie without showing the monster, and that it'll be like the blair Witch. The movie is sopposed to be told from the point of view of a group of 5 friends, and shot through a camcorder.
If they do actually show the monster, I think it'll look a little like Godzilla, the newer version that is.
