What do the butterflies mean in "I am Legend"?!

Question: do they have a specific meaning? like maybe the virus changes people as a coccoon changes a butterfly? or am I reading into it too much?

also, do you think the mom and girl were killed by the out of control helicopter....it never showed for sure?

I think you've got the right idea. Generally, in literature, butterflies signify a transformation or rebirth, sometimes an association to Christ and redemption. In this case, Dr. Neville's blood was going to provide a rebirth of the human race. The movie maker's introduced the butterfly theme early on in the movie, then again when Smith was in the cornfield with Sam (there were a bunch of butterflies around), on Anna's neck and then again in the pattern of broken plexiglass. Too, the butterfly symbol represented hope--hope of other survivors like Anna and her son, and the butterfly reminded Smith of his daughter, especially his last promise to her of reversing the situation.

And, yes, I think that his family was killed by the crash of the helicopter.

His little girl always play with her hand making buttlerfly.
Later in the movie when the lady appear she said the GOD told her that there are more survivors. Will smith did not believed that...but at the end when they were trap in the lab she saw the ladies tatoo on her neck of a BUTTERFLY and she remember the daughter saying butterflies all the time...So he then knew that GOD was sending her after he checked the blood of the infected humanoid on the table and realized that is the cure...

i dont know!
