Saw the Golden Compass yesterday. What was the big deal about it? I enjoyed it?!

Question: Neither my friend nor I saw anything anti-God in this movie. Maybe we didn't try and analyze eveyrthing and just went to be entertained. I liked the bears and the demons (well they could have used another word maybe so as not to stir up the fire). I'm looking forward to the 2nd one. Any idea as to when it will be out? Are they filiming them back to back like they did Lord of the Rings?

Well, the movie glossed over a lot of stuff that was in the book. But the Magisterium in the movie (the people Nicole Kidman worked for) are basically the church and they are portrayed as the bad guys... so it's not very favorable toward religion...

Personally, I think everyone is making a big deal out of nothing. It's an adventure story! And if someone were to make a major life decision -- like whether to believe in God -- based on a movie, well, I think that's very sad...

it has golden in it that makes it sweet

the movie was changed from the book to make it more mainstream and less controversial. It was all a bunch of hot air because of what was said in the book

it was more the book that gave hints that the catholic church were being ridiculed to be honest. but you have to remember its set in a DIFFERENT world, and also, its a BOOK lol. you should read all three books by phillip pullman they are ace!

I guess the guy who wrote the book was a big atheist loudmouth with and axe to grind against organized religion and the Catholic church and the religious nutters out there are all up in arms about it. As long as you enjoyed the movie, more power to you. Let the loudmouths and the nutters fight among themselves.

people always over exaggerate it looks dumb

Some of the crazy Christian fundamentalists adhere to the philosophy that if it's not pro-bible, it must be anti-god.

The fantasy portrayal of a fictional world flies in the face of their rigid views of the world through the lens of their religious background... so they consider it anti-god.

It's just a mindless rabble that the rest of us have to learn to ignore... for now.

The books are more anti-organised religion than anti-god. This becomes more apparent in books 2 and 3, so I'm assuming it will be more obvious in the follow-up films.

The next film, The Subtle Knife, is due out sometime in 2009.

The big deal is that in the 3rd book..

Spoiler Alert -

The rebel forces slay God, who isn't really God at all.., just the oldest angel, also feeble and weak, unable to defend himself. Some people take offense at this depiction.

Edit: The books weren't all that great, and they will probably not make a 2nd movie as the 1st one did not recoup the production cost.

It wasn't the movie but the BOOK that was in dispute.

Anything anti-God doesn't belong in a Roman Catholic school.

Save it for the public schools.

I also enjoyed it, as I enjoyed reading the books. There is an anti-religious theme, but like you say, it's best to just watch and enjoy without over-analyzing.
I hope they release the Subtle Knife soon, from the trilogy it was my favorite.

There is no thing Anti-God in The Golden Compass, but there is in the 2nd or 3rd book. I'm not sure about when the next movie is out and the Lord or the Rings is not anything like this movie.
