Will there be a 2nd movie of his dark materials?!
Question: The Golden Compass did not do as well as the creators hoped it would, and being that it was so disapointing, they may not make another, however they might release the 'extended cut' when The Golden Compass comes out on DVD because the ending in the movie was not the ending in the book, and they filmed the end and then decided to start The Subtle Knife with it if everything went as according to plans. I think it's a fantastic movie, and I read they're going to really downplay any anti-christian themes as to not disrespect them, so I say, everyone should go see it, because that's what will decided it's fate, and the fate of the rest of the books.

Since the jury is still out on whether Golden Compass will get back what it cost to make it, I'd say nobody can really answer that right now. My best guess would be "no". It cost a $180 million to make and who knows how much to market. Domestic box office total as of Jan. 13, 2008 is $67,513,776. Not pretty numbers. The worldwide total is much higher and there will be DVD sales but you gotta have a HUGE profit on these kinds of mega-films to justify making them.
Nope. "The Golden Compass" lost a boatload of money for New Line Cinema. There's no way they'll make a sequel.
