Okay, talked to my friend.

To compare and contrast those two you chose:

Both during WWII
One in Pacific theatre
One in European theatre
Both have a hero
Both heroes save a life - one being a fellow soldier, the other being the friend's fiancee and baby

Both incorporate graphic scenes of violence, by SPR is more graphic

Pearl harbor has an African American character, the other doesn't

SPR was critally acclaimed and nominated for best picture
Pearl Harbor critally panned and was overly melodramatic

In SPR they were fighting the Germans and in PH the Japanese

SPR dealt with a philosophical mission of not allowing an entire family to be destroyed by war.

Pearl Harbor dealt with a national catastrophe which affected American psyche.

PH takes place prior to the events in SPR

Both movies dealt with secrets - Tom Hanks never told his men he was a teacher - didn't want to get too close to his men

PH dealt with the secret of the love triangle between the three main characters

The message in Pearl Harbor is that America will survive and triumph. In SPR, the message is about the sacrifice of a group to save an individual

SPR - Dark, gloomy, foreboding, dirty
PH - Brighter, too many close ups (which is a standard Michael Bay film trait)

Hope this helps.

I've not seen Saving Private Ryan, but I'll give some ideas on what I might compare/contrast.

You could discuss the technical aspects of the film (i.e. lighting, camera angles, editing, music)The technical parts of a film are generally the easiest thing to compare/contrast if you know what you're looking for. You could also talk about the main message of the film. What are the movies trying to tell the viewer? Are they similar, or different and in what ways? How are the stories different or similar? What about the realism of the films? Are they historically accurate, is one more so than the other?

Personally, I might compare E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Discussing their different views on alien life and how the aliens interact with the people of earth. The different missions/goals that the extra terrestrials have with coming to earth. How does the audience relate to the aliens in each of the films? Or perhaps compare E.T. to a film that takes an entirely different approach to aliens, something like Independence Day where aliens are hostile. Stuff like that.
