When buying a DVD, whats better? Widescreen edition or fullscreen edition?!

Question: And whats the difference? Full screen edition usually costs a little bit more. Is it the better version?

In a year or so you won't be able to get full screen so the best bet is to get wide screen. Many people don't understand what the difference between the two really is. Which format do you think give you the "whole" movie? If you said full screen you are wrong. Ever see that little message that appears when you are watching a TV broadcast of a movie ... the one that says "This film has been modified from its original version ... it has been formatted to fit your screen" ... that is in reference to turning it into full screen. All movies are "filmed" in wide screen format ... when it is "formatted to fit your screen" what actually happens is 25% of the images from the outside edges of the movie have been cropped off. I know most of you are thinking I'm nuts right now and while that might be the case I'm still right. Get the same movie in wide and full screen format and watch the same scene in both versions and you will see what I'm talking about. It isn't as noticable as you might think but you will see the difference.

The best movie I know of that you can see this very clearly in is Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menance. Go to the end of it where the duel between Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Maul is. The part to watch for is around the spot where Maul picks up some broken piece of machinery and "Force throws" it into a door release to open the doors he is backing through. In that scene Obi-Wan is walking towards Maul spinning his lightsabre around ... in the full screen version all you see is the arm and the lightsabre ... in the wide screen version you see all of Obi-Wan walking towards him.

I'm sure there are other movies where this subtle change can be seen but this is the first that comes to mind. As I said, it is hard to see if you're not looking for it but if you are looking for it you will see it.

depends what kind of t.v. tou have.

depends on the movie. if its a classy one, i like wide. if its an action, crazy, amazing, dramitical movie...i like full...
lol;-) jk, but i do like both, and sometimes i really do get in the mood to watch one over the other.

how big is your TV if you have a tv smaller than 37 inches go with full screen. if its 37 inches or more go widescreen. Wide screen is exactly what you see when you see a movie in the theaters. full screen the picture has be formatted. they cut about 5% off both sides and stretch the picture to fill the screen. in titanic for example if you watch it in widescreen you see more bodies falling off the side of the ship as it sinks. in fullscreen they get cut off.

if your tv is smaller you will notice the 'black bars' at the top and bottom of a wide screen movie. lots of people think the studios put those bars there for some reason. when in reality the bars are just nothing. if your tv is 37 or more or the 16:9 ratio (rectangular) you wont even see the 'black bars'

Wide screen is better. Wide screen gives you those weird black bars at the top and bottom of your TV screen, but that's only because what you see is what was actually shown in a movie theater--it's not cropped to fit the dimensions of your TV. Full screen means that your entire TV screen is filled with the movie, but that's a cropped version, so you often don't get to see things that happen to the far left or far right of the film (as it was intended to be seen by the director).

Heavens WIDESCREEN!!! 100%. Films should be meant to be seen the way the director intended. With FULLSCREEN, the sides get cropped off and you see only half the picture.

It doesn't matter what kind of TV you have. Widescreen is by far better.

i like full screen. i have a 65 inch television and widescreen still bugs the crap out of me. i cringe when i have to watch a movie in widescreen. so if you dont mind black on the bottom and top of your picture go with widescreen otherwise full screen.

Always get widescreen, because all new TVs are going to be widescreen anyway. Don't listen to people who tell you to buy full screen to cover the whole square. You're protecting your DVD investment for the future. You can make WS look good on square screens, but FS movies look horrible on WS TVs when you stretch 'em -- and just as bad when you don't!
