Question: im watching Citizen Kane and i'm blown away by what i see as run-away egotism and narsicism not because of the movie but the thought of a actual person being that way. Movies are supposed to be over-the-top. Did Hearst start a war to sell newspapers?

Yes indeedy, he did -- or at least is believed to have done. It was the Spanish American war. He didn't blow up the Maine, but his papers beat the drum for war.

He also had Marion Davies as a mistress, and pushed her acting career.

There is now doubt "Citizen Kane" was based on the life of William Randolf Hearst. As the previous poster has said his papers would not let the sinking of the USS Maine die.
Charles Foster Kane built his castle, Zanado.
William Randolf Hearst built his castle, Hearst Castle, on the California coast with his own private zoo with exotic animals from all over the world.
If you ever get to San Simeon, California the castle is worth a visit.
