I just saw Cloverfield and paid attention to the scene carefully. He appeared to have night vision goggles on his head, but I saw nothing to hide. Certainly there was nothing to gain from seeing his face not blurred unless the actor did not sign a release to be in the trailer. This confused me as well.
Good question, it was blurred so people can watch it or it was for some other reason that the producers wanted to have before the actual release.
