Pan & Scan (P&S) and Fullscreen
Pan & Scan and Fullscreen both describe the same thing. In order to fit a rectangular movie onto a square TV, a significant area of each scene has to be cut off or else the images would be elongated. Pan & Scan actually refers to the process of "refilming" a movie, in which the operator chooses the most important square area of each frame to capture. While a sizable amount of the original frame is lost through this process, some people prefer the fullscreen format, because there are no black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.
Pan and Scan (Image has been cropped by as much as up to 40% in order to fill the screen. Most VHS tapes for sale and rental are all Pan & Scan)

Movies are made wide like movie theater screens. If you have a square tv, there will be black bars at the top and bottom to make it fit right.
Pan & Scan movies have been zoomed in so that you don't see so much on the sides, but it gets rid of the black bars. Sometimes this cuts people out of a scene if they are standing on the side.
If you have a widescreen tv, P&S is a giant waste.
