There's a few reasons the movie is called Cloverfield.

First, near JJ Abrams production company there is a street called Cloverfield and when they originally started making the film they needed to keep the title secret. He wanted to be able to market this movie with as much control as possible and so he kept a lid on the whole film within his controls. It was supposed to be a temporary name only, like "Blue Harvest" was the secret name "Return of the Jedi" was filmed under.

Second, after the untitled trailer played in front of Transformers last year; the internet went crazy looking for information on the film... which was apparently less than a week into filming when its trailer was released. People found out that JJ Abrams' Production Company "Bad Robot" was filming a movie with the cover name "Cloverfield". Once that name was uncovered they went through several other cover names like, "Slusho" and "Chocolate Outrage". The internet apparently captured the real name though unbelievably early before the San Diego Comic Con... which was "Monstrous". With the true title spoiled JJ Abrams and Bad Robot jumped into action and created a series of 4 posters to keep the name a secret. All the posters had either an adjective like , "Monstrous" or "Terrifying". Except for one that was Blank. Anyway in the scramble to go with a good name that people seemed to like... they went with the one everyone already knew and gave nothing away about the film, "Cloverfield".

Third, and the answer I think you're really looking for. The reason the film is called, "Cloverfield" based on the movie itself. The idea according to the director is that whenever the United States Government has something secretive going on... like researching the Atomic Bomb they code name it something like, "The Manhattan Project". A name with no meaning other than to those who are involved. Apparently, after the event is over... the Department of Defense decides to code name this disaster, 'Cloverfield'. Just like after the events depicted Central Park is known as 'US 447'. This would be a method for maintaining secrecy on something which would obviously be classified top secret. So if you are in the FBI or CIA and you want video of that night you'd have to be someone who knew that the Department of Defense called this thing 'Cloverfield'.

Now for some conjecture... some believe that in the future the name will mean something more... The movie definitely leaves room for more information to be gathered but whether its just a classified name for the Monster's attack or something deeper its an effective title nonetheless.

Personal thoughts: I loved it... I thought it was well made and acted and that it was a really smart movie experience. I had a ton of fun... I went in a group on a crowded theater to one of the preshows on Thursday and the girls leapt out of their seats about 20 different times. The sound effects alone were enough to see this flick in my opinion... the theatre I saw it at had the volume all the way up and the whole place shook during Monster attacks. One of the few movies where I'm dying for a sequel so I can see more.

Wow. Hmm. I have never saw a movie where I didn't pick up on the title..I have yet to seen Cloverfield. Maybe it is the town or city..Or something...It looked good from the previews, though.

They originally wanted to keep the film a secret so they gave it the code name "Cloverfield." It is the name of the street near one of their offices. Then they name got out as being the name of the movie, so they decided to keep it.

OMGOMGOGM u saw it?
msg me back k?

was it good?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
was it scary???
is the whole movies video theme just as if someones video taping it? or are there any parts where its normal?

please tell me thanks!!! :] <33;

According to my research, the movie was code-named "Cloverfield" early in the development process because the film studio offices that made the movie was located in Cloverfield Blvd, Santa Monica. It doesn't really have anything to do with the movie. I guess the filmmakers were just to lazy to change the codename. Or they thought it was mysterious....

To keep things under raps and from getting leaked the producer J.J. Abrams called it "Cloverfield", beacuse it is the name of the freeway exit Abrams takes to get to his Santa Monica office.

well the movie sucked personally it wasnt scary but if you go see it don't sit near the front you will throw up because they move the camera so much! but it wouldve been really retarted not to have filmed it that way i would've just liked them not to move it so much... 3 stars....

i actually liked the movie....still don't understand the title tho...
Cloverfield was really intense and very suspenseful!!! i loved it...i'd go to see it again and again!! the whole home movie theme was okay i guess...it sometimes made u feel like u were really there but other times gave me a head ache!!

When people heard that this film was being made, J J Abrams wanted it to be vague as to the real title.

"Cloverfield" was chosen, as that was the street that the company is located.

when the Internet grabbed this and ran with it, it was too late for J J to change it to the title he really wanted

i just found out that it was a code name for the project because it was supposed to be a secret. they were gonna change the name, but it had already spread through the internet, so they kept it.
