A lot of things indicate that the little arthropod monsters falling off the large fleshy monster were its parasites, not its offspring. It would very much be like lice or other parasites known to plague large animals. A lot of parasites secrete chemicals in its saliva to aid in the siphoning of blood/nutrients. A well-known example is mosquito saliva, which contains an anti-coagulant that also causes the itchy allergic reaction you get after a mosquito bite. If a tiny mosquito causes an inflammatory response in a much bigger animal such as ourselves, it could be extrapolated that the effect could be fatal (and graphic) on a creature that is close to the mosquito's size. Do you see what I'm getting at?
