The Outsiders (1983)

IMDB synopsis:
Based on the S.E. Hinton novel of the same name. The tension between two groups, The Greasers and The Socials "Socs", puts Ponyboy Curtis (C. Thomas Howell) and his best friend Johnny Cade (Ralph Macchio) in a bad spot. One night at the movies, Ponyboy and Johnny fall in love with Sherri "Cherry" Valance (Diane Lane) and Marcia (Michelle Meyrink) once they get Dally Winston (Matt Dillon), the toughest and meanest of the Greasers, to stop attempting to "score" Cherry and Marcia. What Johnny and Ponyboy don't know is that Cherry and Marcia are girls for the snobbish, popular, and rich group, the Socs.
NOTE: Y!A won't let me post the link to IMDB! I tried several times to cite my source.

When Johnny commits murder to save Ponyboy, the two go on the run, ending up hiding out in an abandoned church in the countryside. They survive on bologna sandwiches and fill time by having Ponyboy read "Gone With the Wind" to Johnny.

Also in the cast are Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise, Leif Garrett and Darren Dalton. Author S.E. Hinton has a role as the nurse who has a rough time with Dally at the hospital.

I went to the theater to see this film so many times that the theater manager started refunding my money! She also did this when I went to see "Excalibur" and "The Karate Kid" a number of times. She said a number of people had told her that a "reheaded lady" told them about these movies and she had no doubts who it was! I have loved the novel since I first read it in the Sixties, and I even got to teach it while student-teaching. So, it's only natural that I fell in love with the movie, too.

Stay gold.

100% the outsider
