Why people take action movies and superheroes so seriously?!

Question: At least Alfred Hitchcock had the nerves to admit that most of his movies were "just entertainment", not to be taken seriously. Yet I see people making "cult" out of "The Matrix", "Spiderman" and others. And trying to get "serious symbolism" out of them. Come one, it's just fiction! Some parody I can see. I grew up watching "Superman" and "Batman and Robin" old tv shows and they were mostly for laughs. What now? Feedback, please.

If you think that all movies are "just fiction", are not based on human experience or the human condition, and do not contain any symbolism, then I'm afraid you are lying to yourself.

If they're "just for entertainment", then why do people show them in school?

"The Matrix," for example, IS based on many philosophical concepts, a previous poster stated, and it's also quite Biblical. As are a lot of other big-budget movies, like "Rocky" and "O Brother Where Art Thou?" (a comedy based on Homer's "The Odyssey")...most superhero movies are pretty Biblical too, and at least center around a character with some sort of Messiah complex (especially Superman and Spider-Man...you will find that the majority of major superheroes were created by Jewish men, as a sort of modern-day Messiah).

There is all sorts of symbolism behind all sorts of movies. And there's tons of literature out there about it. Try the Popular Culture and Philosophy book series, then maybe you'll understand a little better.

The matrix actually is centered around philosophy.

I don't. I prefer to watch a hilarious comedy over a superhero/action movie any day, unless its funny too.

The only serious "cult" stuff I can think of is Star Trekkies and people who watch The Nasty Horror Picture Show with confetti and squirt guns etc.

Some people like something to be passionate about. If theres a movie or series you really love, you like to talk with others about it, get their opinions, share yours. Isn't that why we're all here on Yahoo! Answers at the movies????

IDK about "cult" status, but I DO get perturbed when they make all these god-awful live action movies based off of comic book and cartoons that some people hold near and dear to their hearts.

X-Men 3 was just horrendous because Phoenix is supposed to be this ultra powerful, fiery bird-like entity that can fly in outer space at warp whatever number you wanna apply and devour entire planets.

The live action movie version gave us this pale biotch with a bad attitude. If you're gonna do a movie based off of characters that the FANS made popular in the first place then you should have enough respect for them and the material to at least get it right.

Why is it that Superman, Spidey, the Incredibles, and the Fantastic Four can all keep their colorful costumes, but the X-Men can only wear these dark trench coats and dark leather outfits? And WHY did they give that movie to the terrible Rush Hour guy?

Other examples of live action movies based off of comic books and cartoons and getting them horribly wrong are: Catwoman, Constantine, Elektra, the Hulk and Transformers.

Transformers was one of the worst. But then again, Mike Bay was behind it, so I was NOT really all that surprised. I wanted to see a movie about the Transformers, NOT some stupid, whiny kid and some soldiers.

And who the heck is Shia LeBeouf and WHY should we care?

Edit: You can thumbs down me all you want, biotches. It only just goes to show that "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!"

I am one who enjoys and love the superhero and Scifi genre,
cause some of us love those movies.

For me it's about manintaining that part of my youth, I've been a comicbook collector for over 25yrs and finally seeing these characters come to life on the screen is just an amazing thing,
some more amazing than others. Mind you it doesn't rule my life, I dont dress up and attend every convention all over the united states, or camp outside the movie theatre for days, I'm not a "die-hard fan" in that way, I don't have the time or the money to do that. All I'm saying is that Star Wars, superhero comicbooks has been a part of my life growing up it's what kept me out of trouble, so that's why I take them serious and when The Fantastic Four sucks on the screen I'll voice my opinion, and only because you just want to see them done right, it means that much to you and like what Fakenewman and Tiffany S. said, there's a philosophy to these characters, you didn't realize this when you were 11 yrs. Only now when your an adult you see this, and it takes on a whole new meaning.
