What happened in the movie "The Mist"?!

The movie is based on a story by Stephen King. The ending isn't the same as in the story; in this ending, the main character, his son, a blonde woman in the store, and an older couple make it out of the grocery store. But they are still in the mist, and they hear lots of noise, and think that the things are coming from them, so the main character uses the four remaing bullets in his gun to (mercy) kill everyone except himself (not enough bullets).
Then he steps outside of his jeep and realizes that a lot of people have survived, and the noise is not actually the "things" in the mist but rather the military is transporting the survivors, and therefore, he didn't need to shoot anyone in his jeep.
It turns out that if you put the last page in the book, one of the brothers is released from the prison. Don't put the page in the book; instead, use the green book where you found the last page.
