Funny how people remember classic movies like "The Apartment", "N!

Question: Yet when these movies were made then, most people didn't give a damn about them. Movie houses were mostly showing B-movies like "The Amazing Colossal Man", "Teenagers from outer Space" and "The Attack of the Crab Monsters". Really! Feedback, please.

That's true. To a certain extent, we've gone to far the other way now, where everything's an "instant classic" as if that's possible. To be honest though, most great pieces of any art form aren't fully appreciated until after they've been around for a while.

*LOL* I never thought of that but you're right..That is funny

Well, "The Apartment" did win the Oscar for Best Picture. It got attention. And it certainly played in theaters. So I don't really know what you're getting at. Somebody gave a damn - they might not have fully realized what a classic it was, and that it would still be popular decades later, but it was certainly watched and beloved in its day. (It even spawned a Broadway musical adaptation.)

It's not so dissimilar from today, when the movies that make big bucks are generally stupid and forgettable, whereas the ones that people talk about and get awards are much smaller in scale. Nobody's gonna remember Cloverfield in a couple years, and people will still be talking about There Will Be Blood. That's how it always goes with film, where art and commerce both come into play.

It all depended where you lived. Yes the local theaters played the B movies, and I saw most of them. I lived 20 miles south of San Francisco. We went to the city and saw all the greatest movies. This was the late 50's early 60's. Films like "The Apartment", "Mondo Cane" and "Tom Jones".
We moved to San Jose in the late 60's. They built some great theaters and we saw films like "2001, A Space Odyssey", "Funny Girl", "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines", :Midnight Cowboy" and "M*A*S*H".
