I remember May of 1977 very well. My husband and I were there at the theater on the day Star Wars first opened in the Detroit area. We had gone to a jam-packed, sold-out showing. No one knew quite what to expect. We had been mesmerized by 2001: A Space Odyssey two years prior. The characters in that movie were flat (not well rounded and personable). But Star Wars introduced new and entertaining characters. Luke Skywalker was young and handsome. Han Solo, though we had seen him in small roles before, was now more mature and charismatic. Princess Leia was a new face, at least to us. How did she get her hair in those tight buns? And Chewbacca? He was cool! But the best parts of the movie were the space fight scenes and the laser-light sword battles . How did they do that, we all wondered.

I saw the movie at a drive-in theatre. For the time that it was made--the special effects were awesome. So much of it was hand-designed not cg. I thought at the time that it wasn't so far fetched as some people thought the technology was. It had a different story line that wasn't the norm for then and what was really unusual for that stretch is it was a movie the whole family could watch that wasn't Disney. I am not a sci fi fan at all but the Star Wars movie(s) I liked. My husband has all 6 of the movies. Imagining the different aliens and what others might look like was the topic a lot of the people I was around talked about. It changed some people's perspective as to what an alien would look like. It became more acceptable to think that they may be like humans personality wise but could also be more deadly and ugly like the alien in the movies Alien(s)

well, not sure I'll be of much help, because I didn't see it when it first came out in 79, I saw it in theaters when they "re-released" it before they did all the digital re mastering stuff.

as for my take on the move..
I really liked it. I loved the action, and even though it was already old by the time I saw it, the graphics were still amazing for it's time (especially since the director tried to make everything look as real as possible)
and if I can continue on through all 3 of the first movies.. I also loved the love story between Leah and Han Solo, and the twist about Leah and Luke being siblings, not to mention the Darth Vader twist.
The graphics and the special effects set the standard for other movies, even today. Movies like that are still held up to Star Wars for comparison on the best use of technology, special effects, and the how cutting edge or new the ideas are.

I really hope I helped.. and if I didn't, I hope someone else responds that can.
Good luck on your homework

First it came out in 1977. Second, I don't think my thoughts on it will give you anything to write about but here goes ...

I was 8 years old in May of '77 and I remember sitting there the whole time with my jaw on the floor. This movie was unlike anything that had ever been done before. I walked out of it in a daze with the words "How did they do that ..." running through my brain. I actually went back in and saw it again and, just like every time I have watched is since, was blow away by it. The dialog was kind of weak but the space battles and lightsabre fight were beyond description. I can't even image what films would be like now if Star Wars hadn't come along.
