Question: but in the last moments of the credits he appears on the beach with his turtle, his scorpion, and his tarantula, which would mean that he was alive and in Mexico. Is this just supposed to make me feel better, or did I miss something and he actually lived through the ordeal somehow?

you sure it was him and not someone else? i only saw the movie once so i really dont know, that would be my guess though
