Question: i love the ending. Its open to interpretation and let's the audience decide. I think the lovers did die, and the scenes of them when they are old are the "what if" scenes. I also think its metaphorically very beautiful when they promise their love through cement. Its different, un-hollywood ending, which is what i love about it. I think most french films are like that though.
