Robert de Niro is very versatile actor. He can be truly scary (cape fear) when he needs to be. Truly convincing as an actor.
Sly has more mass appeal I think...and it's giving him the big bucks.

the walk of fame in hollywood is "ON SALE" You pay for Your star You will have it.You want an specific address,? that's gonna cost You more.
can You pay good adverticements ,and You have a good promoter, they will give You the Oscar.

I think accolades isn't even important in this catregory I go with who you watch on screen and are they are convincing you that they are a different character each time. With Sly I didn't get that and he was always stuck in Rocky or Rambo era. I personally put my money on DeNiro he has played good,bad, crazy, and sane all convincly I might say so awards have a tendency of ending up in the wrong hands all the time.
Though awards and gross sales for a movie can be used as basis, I think its the actor's ability to tackle different roles (no matter if its lead or supporting) in one or several genres (comedy, drama, action) that should make one the better actor.
with that said...my vote goes to De Niro

Sylvester Stallone is not even a great actor, he's just decent, in my opinion.

De Niro if it's just about acting.
Robert De Niro, easily. He can play many different types of characters while Stallone is known, and for good reason, for his roles in action movies. Stallone also has the record for most Razzie award nominations and wins. I liked Rambo (4) and he was great in the action scenes but he only had about two lines.
