I think Ariel wasn't very good with her judgement skills.
I mean think about it....she did turn to Ursula in her "time of need".
All in all she was acting like most normal teens, rebelling against what her parent thought was best for her.
In the end it all turned out well for her....but that was expected, I mean come on...it was a Disney movie!
And btw we know she was 16 because she said so in the movie.

How do you know she was 16? She could have been 30, besides she not a teen, she's a mermaid so mermaids probably have different morals then teens.
