Because they used to come out after the first movie of a double-feature, so they did trail. The name simply stuck from the old days.

well its bcuz a trailer is a short portion of the movie its baisiclly a summery

They used to be called 'trailers' back when people used to go to the cinema to see Double Bills. Previews would show before the first film. Trailers would then follow this film to give the audience a break from the movies, give them time to use the facilities and to allow the film reels to be changed ready for the second film of the Double Billing. I guess the term has just stuck as a term in general usage, but the term 'Preview' can be used also too, and I think people would still know what you mean. Hope that makes sense. :-)

because they were used for after some tv shows to express what was going on next week and were eventually adopted into use for film.they were probably just called trailers because they were like the ones on tv.or maybe trailers were shown after a movie was over? im not sure but thats my understanding.

They used to be shown ATER the feature. A long time ago.

Now they are called "previews."

Trailers is a term of endearment that has stuck. I love calling them trailers, no matter where they show up.
