Horror fans please help?!

Question: I am in my second year of a Media studies A level and am currently doing a write up about Hostel 2 and Saw 3. My question is.... " Why has the new sub genre of the "Gorno" horror film had such a rise and fall in the last two years? With focus on Saw 3 and Hostel 2." I wonderd if any of you had any ideas for this or any really good sites that would help me with this. Thankyou.

I think that people have just become more desensitized to all the violence over the years. Look at the news.. it's certainly not the same as it was even 30 years ago- wars, torture, etc. Somehow, a zombie just isn't scary anymore.. It's far more scary to have a situation that can REALLY happen- a "regular" person that knows everything about you (Saw) or traveling to an unknown country (Hostel)

because people like sick stuff.

Wrap that in scientific language and you've got it.

i have a theory - scary movies have gotten more visceral and more gorey over the years.
Compare a scary movie by Hitchcock (Psycho for instance) has a LOT of fear, but almost no gore. the worst it gets in gore is the shower scene, where, beleive it or not, you never see the knife actually stab the woman, and i think the only blood you see is oon the shower stall, being rinsed out by the shower water.

Over the years, movies became more explicit, to out-gore eadh other.

After movies like Seven, it took so much SHOCK to shock people that the torture-porn movies were created. it was certainly shocking, and caused a lot of controversy, which is good for box office. But after a few of them, the buss wore off because it wasn't shocking anymore - everybody had already seen it.

So that genre was no longer as successful, which meant there was less money availalbe to produce that sort of movie.

I suspect that lots of the money is going into cheaper indie films, since they can cost so little, and can make so much when they catch on.

Sometimes, movies are about art and plot and the human condition.
sometimes, it is just about making money, or trying to.

I saw the first Hostel movie and I never wanna see another movie like that again as long as I live. There is know reason for any movie to be as graphic as that movie was. I had nightmares for weeks afterwards.

I'm not sure if this will help you at all. It's a New York Movies review about the type of films dubbed "torture porn". I hope this link will work.

Why aren't these links working?! Did Y!A change its setup?

oh god!those movies are not horror.they are sick by killing and melting people nerves.I really enjoy horror movies and I think every one love that more than a sick movie

Agree with the above posters - horror films like this are gross. In answer to your question though, I think you should consider the increase in computer generated images as being a key element in the rise of torture horror. It is now possible to make the most gruesome of images appear as though they are real.

proberly cos people just keeping wanting to see more and more

freddy used to scare the life out of me but my teenage daughter thinks hes funny....enough said!!

From my viewpoint it is because when saw and hostel cam out that type of horror film was newer but now that that have Hostel 2 and Saw part 2 , 3 ,4 and soon 6, 7 and whatever. Plus all the copy cats versions of these films and these type of films it wore them out quite fast.

I think your question is a bit narrow. Can you really chart a rise and fall over a period as short as two years? My main problem with Saw 3 isn't the gore, more that it doesn't build suspense in an effective manner. Normally with a horror movie you get some shock and gore at the beginning then a respite to allow tension to build up again. With Saw III all you get is unrelenting torture and gore for at least 20 mins which wears you down rather than frighten you. It doesn't really have any sense of subversion or fun about it (like Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Cabin Fever), it's just a relatively big budget sequel slumming it and pretending to be grindhouse. Haven't seen Hostel 2 but I really liked Hostel which actually isn't as gory as you would expect and the end reminds me of Hitchcock.
