Question: while watching Gladiator again, Juba told Maximus (Russell Crowe) "He must kill your name before he kills you." What does that mean ? I have an idea of what it means but i'm not so sure.

Maximus has a great reputation as a leader, soldier, and countryman. Juba is telling Maximus that Commodus cannot kill Maximus' respect of the people, and even after physical death, Maximus name will have more honor, iconic. Commodus must try to show the people that Maximus is nothing, just a slave and traitor, by trying to turn the people against him, and then when he dies, his name will die too. But ... alas, Maximus is still remembered.

Yes, it means the Emperor has to ruin his reputation, otherwise the people would revolt against him. Once he (Maximus) was ruined in the people's eyes they would not care if he died.
I believe it means that in order for him not to become a martre or thought of in a positive way by the people, he would have to destroy his good name first. By making him unliked first, no one would think twice of him again if he was killed.

The people of Rome had gained too much respect for Maximus for the emporer (Cassius) To just kill him off without reason. They would more than likely turn against Cassius Juba meant that Cassius would have to destroy Maximus' reputation or make him look like a "bad" person before he could kill him off in order to keep Rome on his side.
