Phantasm~I think at least two of the four films have a downbeat ending. It's possible that all of them do. I haven't seen them for a while.

I know that there are many more, but it's nearly 5:30 a.m., and I had better get some sleep. Actually, people are wrong about there always being happy endings. Most were given a tiny happy bit at the end, such as in "Sweet Charity", but Hollywood has been giving us sad endings since the Silents. My problem is that I can think of a lot of titles; but, by the time I type a couple, the others have slipped away thanks to my short-term memory problems, which is why making lists is a good exercise for my brain.

I've been a dedicated film fan for more than 50 years, so I have watched and remember a lot of movies. I just have to think of the end scenes and decide happy-sad. But, I'm trying to stick with movies that have a fairly bleak ending.

One of the best that you are likely to see is the recently (6 months) No Country For Old Men. Being a Coen brothers film, you know that you are in for an interesting ride. The cinematography and acting are superb, and the story is quite uniqely done. Let me know what you think of the film.

American cinema is known for its happy endings, European audiences are more into realistic ones and often have unhappy endings in theirs. But there are several movies without any.

All Quiet on the Western Front
Philadelphia (Tom Hanks)
Se7en
Memento
Of Mice and Men
The Omen
The Butterfly Effect
Moulin Rouge
City of Angels

well mystmoon way to go overboard... recently I enjoyed "There will be blood" no happy ending there. I really see your point though, Even movies like Titanic and others seem to have this positive note at the end. Very few end unhappy.

Titanic
E.T.
No Country For Old Men
There Will Be Blood
