How can people like these movies?!

Question: why do people like movies like Barbershop, American Pie, The Ring, Transformers, Dude, Where's my Car, Step Up, Superbad, The Mummy, National Treasure? I guess a better question is why do most people list these type of movies among their favorites of all time? Why is it these same people that like these movies cannot sit through a great movie like Casablanca. They think these movies are boring. They tend to not like all the great film. I once told my friend to watch the movie 'One flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest', I was certain he would enjoy it. I mean come on it's a great movie but he thought it was boring. Then I asked him what his favorite movie was of all time and he told me it was American Pie.

Everyone has different taste in what they like in movies. But the one thing that movies always bring to the watcher is either adventure, thrills, fright, laughter, joy, sadness or even insparation.
Movies let you escape from reality for a few hours.
I have often found that when i am down, that a movie, even one like Transformers which i grew up on, will help me forget what got me down in the first place and will pick my spirits up.
But like i said before, everyone is different.
Now here is something funny for you. I am 41 and love the classics like Casablanca, my father hates the classics and sees no reason to watch them, feels it is a waste of time to watch old movies. I have a collection of over 886 movies on VHS and DVD. I have been collecting them since 1984 and there are classics in my collection from the 3 stooges, the original titanic movie, john waynes in black and white and more. I watch them when i feel nastalgic and they still bring me joy. But that is me.

I think for a lot of people, they watch movies that do not require them to think. Or maybe they just have bad taste?

i hate American Pie movies but its just what some pl have in taste yes some movies r great to some ppl and some are just plain boring.... personally i like alot of those movies you just posted its just the taste in what some ppl like... but yea i hate American pie movies... there so stupid!

because when you are hi or drunk they are a funny t owatch

why don't you become a movie director and make movies like they did at least back in the nineties and eighties...i can say some of my fav. movies are, the terminal, saving private ryan, terminator 2, indiana jones trilogy, godfather triology, etc.

movie making quality has decreased and so have people's standards

have you seen the latest remakes of king kong, and superman movies...all of them are sh.it - computer generated nowhere near as good as the original

This people just don`t have the same level intelligence that you have. You probably are an intellectual while most of them (no offense to your friend) are just above average.

I personally enjoy Casablanca and all of Bogart's movies, he is my favorite actor. I like old movies better they are meaning full and well made, they have great scripts and tell real stories.

i dont noe i enjoy the movies that make me think abouth the way i think and chage me the ones that will make me cry the ones that stick in your head i like those. people with simple minds like those movies cause they are easy to digest and are good for the family and they dont want to be the person saying Schindler's list is my favorite move and seem racist. i like the old movies and the new ones too but not **** like national tresure

Different tastes, I suppose. But yeah, when I see somebody say that "John Rambo" is his favorite film *ever*, I have to shake my head in wonder. I think very often we're talking about young kids here who make these claims. I'm an old bag of wind, but I remember clearly thinking that "Westworld" was the greatest movie I'd ever seen... when I was 11.

It's all about the information they have been fed over a lifetime. It's hard to understand this generation.(I don't understand it and I dome from it)People who understand movies like Casablanca Haven't had a steady diet of Jerry Springer. This generation has been dumbed down to ascary, scary degree. This is the generation that will be running the world one day, and they(we) don't care about anything...never mind the choice in movies. That's the least of their(our) worries. So what do we do, shut off the x-box and turn to Plato?
What can you do?

I am a film maker and I enjoy good films, but every once in awhile I dont mind popping in the 1st American pie or Super Bad. Critical thinking cant happen all the time you got to mix it up or films will get boring. As far as the rest of the movies you mentioned, beats me I think there horrible. Usually the big Hollywood blockbusters are geared to already have thought it out for you. Thats why I really enjoyed Gone Baby Gone and No Country For Old Men, different plot and ending.

P.S. I hate Casablanca, I actually can no longer sit through old movies unless they have godfather quality. Times change with cinema as well.

Because were NOT living in the 50's or 40's anymore! Those kind of movies don't appeal to neither young adults or older adults. That's why Superbad, American Pie etc. Have become cult classics! They are both entertaining and humourous! That's what entertaining THIS Generation! NOT Casablanca! As a matter of fact look at the movies that were made in the last 20 years. They've actually gotten more perverted, more sex scenes, alot more male and female nudity! I doubt that we'll se any types like Casablanca anytime soon! And that's all because the generation reflect's what's big and what's happening in society! That's what's making money!

And I like those movies myself!

Man, I hate when people have their own opinions.

Different people have different taste. Personally, I've never made it through Casablanca (mainly because I detest nearly all romance movies). Likewise, I couldn't stand The Ring (the original Ringu was far superior... the remake was crap), American Pie, or The Mummy, or Transformers.

National Treasure was entertaining, but not a favorite. The others you mentioned were pretty much worthless in my opinion.

I'd rather watch The Princess Bride than One Flew Over The Cuckoo's nest. Cuckoo's Nest may have won 5 Academy Awards and Princess Bride none, but it's just not my taste. I'm sure not everyone would agree with me that A Clockwork Orange was an incredible film, either.

So in the end it comes down to this. Don't make me watch Casablanca, and I won't make you sit through Clue. ;)

yeah I hear ya

I think the problem is they have the Jonas Brothers

we had the Beatles and the Rolling Stones

they have Will Ferrell

we had Jerry Lewis

Bogart is (slang verb) To keep something all for oneself, thus depriving anyone else of having any.

and not the captain of the Santana

did you know?
His coffin contains a small, gold whistle, put there by his wife

Unfortunately the educational level has gone down the last 20 -30 years. Movies are junk now. I like Star Wars, Airplane, Lord of the Rings, but also Godfather & much older classics. Want to know what I just watched tonight? The Quiet Man w/ John Wayne & Maureen O'Hara. Laughed out loud for over 2 hours. Imagine this. It was a John Wayne movie that wasn't either a western or a war movie. Instead it was just about a guy who moves home to Ireland. Great romantic comedy.
Part of the problem is just plain bad writing. Check out TCM this month, I've seen 3 moviews this week. All better than anything in the theaters because of acting and writing. Thats whats missing, but young people are too lazy to demand better.Mr Deeds with Adam Sandler? No thanks, I prefer the Gary Cooper version, which I saw monday night. Very Funny.

I personally prefer movies that require you to think or feel on a higher level also. But we are all different, which is a great thing! And with being different comes liking different things. That's also pretty great.
Besides once in awhile after a tough week, it's just fun to watch a movie that requires NO thinking!

It's about people's opinion and view of what cinema is. Some enjoy the challenging deep stories and beautiful images and see the cinema as an illusion, an art form, while others think it's entertainment. (Ring a bell?) I think you can't judge people so easily while the popular culture bombards people's minds with junks all the time. And the education system is no other to teach them otherwise.

each person have diffrent taste like eating you should learn to respect othrs taste may be you like something which others dont its normal whats the big deal who says that your taste is the best or who says its the ideal
