John Capenter's The Thing I Iove the gore in that movie. That movie use to give me nightmares when I was a kid lol.

John Carpenter's The Thing from 1982, because so many horror movies now are based on or inspired by movies from this era. I always say stick with the classics first, then the newer ones on a case-by-case basis.
