A background in the other movies is nice , but I think they go back and explain some of the things.
if your not familliar with the story then it will be kind of confusing when they talk of things like the umbrella corp. i watched Extinction first and was pretty confused until i watched the other movies. dont get me wrong though, confusing or not, it was still a good movie

Most movie watchers that saw the original movie prior to sequels, usually forgets what the movie was about anyway. Hahaha !!
Well at least in my case, I couldn't tell you what RE 1 & 2 was about, the first one came out 6 years ago.

i would suggest that you watch the previous accounts beforehand..... although it is a fairly simple plot
Nope, it's fairly self explanatory. I went back and saw the second one because I liked the third one so much. Second one was good too. I hated the first one, fast forwarded through most of it, don't recommend it. Others disagree though.
I love all of these movies so I would say yes simply because they are all excellent. Watching all of them would give you a better understanding and some references so you can say "hey ya" from the other movie. It's also cool cause if you played the 1st games there are many similarities in them and it makes it kinda like an old friend. But I don't think either of these (the previous movies or the games) are required in order to enjoy Resident Evil:Extinction.
P.S. Maybe the other guy doesn't remember some of them cause some of them aren't there. Only 3 movies total, not 4. Resident Evil, Resident Evil:Apocalypse, Resident Evil:Extinction.
You don't NEED to see the others. Especially the first one.
They seem like completely different movies to me.
1 was a horror-ish movie
2 was an action movie
3 was just different
There are reoccurring characters in 3 that came from number 2, but it's not really necessary to know their back story to know what's happening. There seems to be a few years in between 2 and 3 so the there are a few things that no one knows [even if they saw them all] until they do the flashbacks.
Not really. There is a bit of a back story and the beginning might be a little confusing but you catch up rather quickly. Survivors vs. infected zombies. That's about all the story you need to know.
