Buster & Billie (1974)

I'm not really certain, but it does sound a lot like this film, which is set in 1948. Vincent is the most popular boy at school, and Goodfellow is the bad girl. Eventually, this mismatched duo get together, at first because Billie will give him what his fiancee will not. They fall in love, as would be expected, but this isn't a film with a happy ending. Her classmates still think of her as the easy girl, and, when she resists them, she is beaten, raped and murdered, her body dumped.
So, that does match your description somewhat. I remember that Buster is popular but don't recall if he's from a wealthy family.
