ALIEN vs. Independence Day?!

Question: These are both sci-fi movies, but what are the main differences between these movies? I mean as far as atmosphere, etc.

And which movie do you like better?

I like ALIEN much better.

\\They are very different.

Alien is claustrophobic and dark and terrifiying. The alien isn't even shown fully toward the end of the film. The hero isn't clarified till near the end. Not very predictable.

ID4 is open, dark but funny, not very scary and depended more on SFX than story. The heroes are very clairified from the beginning. Very predictable.

Alien is a first rate thriller that draws you into the film.

Independence day is a bubble gum rip off of War of the Worlds.

alien duh. Alien is advance life form taking evolution steps in physical world, while indepence is alien just invading a planet.

Alien for sure.

I like Independence Day better

Both movies are nothing like the day the Aliens will come to earth, raise the temperature of the oceans to 212 degrees F., and boil all humans. Human/Fish stew to take back to the Mother Planet.

Alien is more suspenseful, dealing with one alien surprising a small group of people. Independence day deals with the whole world fighting aliens, and you get to see big ol spaceships over the lands, i thought that was one of the best parts of the movie, and seeing the world in mayhem. I like both but id rather go with independence day.

While Alien is more sci-fi

ID, although a rip of WOW, is more possible - and therefore
scarier

what is at Area 51? only the President's Book of Secrets will tell!

The main difference is that one has Will Smith and is a stupid action movie, the other is a legitimately terrifying, cult science-fiction film.

There is absolutely no question as to which is better. One is an absolute piece.

Well,"Alien" is a smaller film in that the setting(a cargo ship in deep, deep space)has a tense, claustrophobic feel that's just right. As I've said before,it's really a "haunted house"story;dark creepy and tension=filled. The suspense builds and builds until it seems you can't take much more(great editing and direction) and the casting made it just right.Sigourney Weaver as Ripley is an icon and the first,honest-to-God- kick-butt female protagonist(although I wish she hadn't gone back for the damn cat!)
"Independence Day" is an action film(albeit a sci-fi action film)but,it's not your Saturday afternoon kiddie movie,"Independence Day" is HUGE and although it's got some of the best(Oscar nominated)special effects,it's the characters you care about and there are a LOT to care about. You root for them because they could be you and,if they hadn't been so well realized, you'd have a big honkin special-effects movie that just lays there(Need I mention the re-make of "The Haunting?")
For me,there no such thing as better or best between these two. Both are what we plunk down the digits for and they both delivered(still do!)
TL

alien is typically listed as sci-fi, but it is actually gothic horror

independence day is a good old-fashioned popcorn muncher. it has no suspense, just lots of explosions and fast vehicles and americans kicking azz.

if i had to take one of them on a trip w/ me, it would be alien.
