I read somewhere that JJ Abrams confirmed that it was a satellite falling in the background and its impact awakened the monster.

The movie: CLOVERFIELD was really lame. It had the hoakiest monster since ZOLTAR THE THING FROM VENUS.

I thought the movie was dull, boring, and over hyped.
