How does Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka differ from the original?!

Question: I have not seen yet but heard that it was not kid-appropriate and that even alot of adults were offended by it. What makes it bad in that respect compared to the other?

the original is much more "sugary" they made it more appropriate for children by making it more cute. Depp's version is much darker and follows the book much more closely.

Johnny Depp's willie wonka is a lot better
it represents a more "todays" film
+ it's better because Johnny Depp is great!

Johnny Depp is cuter. It isn't kid friendly, but let's be realistic. We are talking Johnny Depp here.

I prefer the original better but that is becuase I think remakes are rediculas.

And the only reason people are so obsessed with the new one is because Johnny Depp is in it

Mainly in that the orginal had quality.

Honestly, I've read the book and seen both movies and while the original is not spot on close, the new version is at least as far off if not worse. I mean, seriously, there's this whole subplot with Wonka longing for a family that was completely fabricated.

And then there's personalities of the Wonka's themselves. Gene Wilder's Wonka was ingenious and witty with this lurking cruelty. Johnny Depp's was moronic and rude.

I find that many fans of the new version are either unflappably loyal to Johnny Depp or Tim Burton and refuse to admit that both came up short with this flick.

The Johnny Depp version is more true to the book that the Gene Wilder version. You might notice that they vary by title as well. Willey Wonka and the chocolate factory started out with Roald Dahl (the books author) attached as the screen writer but ended in disaster. During the course of the film the script was altered to the point that Dahl demanded to be removed from the credits (which didn't happen). Dahl was unhappy with the Willey Wonka version saying that his story was turned into a film for children, something he didn't want. Charley and the Chocolate factory (Depp) was a new chance to do the story right. Although it has a darker theme, two are very similar. The Depp version does tell Wiley wonka's story of how he came to be a candy maker while his punishments for the children (while portrayed more harsh-kind of) have the same result. People told me that it would scare kids too, but mine love the new version and hate the old one. It just comes down to preference. I will say that Depp is a whole lot more entertaining in his version that Wilder was.

The answer to that is simple: Gene Wilder is a much better actor. The part of Willy Wonka was made for him and in my opinion, Johnny Depp...a fine actor, by the way...just can't hold a candle to Mr Wilder. I have enjoyed his movies for more than 30 years.

Willy Wonka has made millions of kids (and just as many adults) smile over the movie. The original was the best...it was one of those movies that can stand on it's own...it didn't need a remake and the remake did not do the original any justice.
