When an Actor/Actress dies during the filming of a movie...???!

Question: How do they replace the person?
Look alikes or computer generated composites?

Look alikes or computer generated composites?

It depends on the movie, what type of role the actor was playing, and how much they had already filmed.
For example, when Brandon Lee was killed during the filming of "The Crow", he had already completed most of his scenes. The rest they were able to fill in by digitally adding his image, or filming another actor from behind. When Oliver Reed died during the filming of "Gladiator", they had a scene with him digitally added later on. With Heath Ledger, they are going to complete the movie he was working on (‘Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus’) with three different actors playing the role. (Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law). They are able to do this because the story line is the story of a man (played by Ledger) who is transported into three separate dimensions. The word is that Depp, Farrell and Law would each step into the role as the character goes into each separate dimension. (So the character appears different depending on which dimension he's in.)

In most cases, lookalikes..

They try to edit in any footage they already have, then lookalikes.

They use other actors to fill in...

They probably just stop production or cast a new member.

It depends on whether or not filming of their scenes is completed. If so, the movie continues as is. If not, they'll usually replace the actor with another and re-shoot their scenes.

i guess its different each time. in The Crow, branden lee died in a stunt accident, and they filled the bits he hadden't filmed yet with someone his height and clothing and hair but never showed his face so the audience doesn't know.

Sometimes I guess they could use look alikes,
But in the case of The Dark Knight and Heath Ledger, they were already done filming.

They could neither cancel the movie (which is the hard way) or change the story of the movie that somehow the role of the Actor/Actress dies.

It depends. If they die quite early on they usually re-cast. If they die part way through (like Oliver Reed - Gladiator) they use computer technology. Vic Morrow died whilst actually filming (The Twighlight Zone) and they used it in the end result - Sickos. It depends on the circumstances.

They can do a variety of things, if the movie is almost complete the stand-in can be used for back and long distant shots. The story could be slightly changed so that the actor could be eliminated from those particular scenes and there is always extra film cut out during the filming so they could use that, adding to the film. If its in the beginning they will just get a replacement actor, I never heard of computer composities being added, not yet.

They usually change the plot a little bit to try and work with the clips they've already shot. Then they use a replacement; side & back shots only.

In 'the crow' the lead actor died halfway through so the rest of the film you only see him from the back cause it's another actor.
but usually they either use existing footage and or a second actor with a face mask and digitally edited features.
They used this technique in 'the lord of the rings' for when Borimer carries Frodo out of Moria.

Sometimes they use look alikes...stunt doubles....and edit the footage already taken.

Sometimes they replace all the scenes that actor or actress was in with a new actor or actress... it depends on how far along they are into making the film.

Sometimes......they just cancel the project all together.
