Portrayal of NYC in romantic comedy movies is similar or different from the real!
Question: In movies or TV shows I see, the characters are all white and there is the feel of NYC being clean and sophisticated and just a pleasant place to live. But is this really representative of the living condition in NY? Surely, that city is more diverse and eclectic.

I'm so happy you asked this! Movies and tv shows portray the city's "nice" areas primarily. Most movies take place on the upper east or west side of manhattan. They make it as if NYC is only made up of madsion, park, and Lexington avenues. They dont show parts like Harlem or Chelsea which are the not so great parts. Plus movies tend to completely ignore the other 4 boroughs. Brooklyn, queens, staten island and the Bronx. The reason again is that these areas are not seen as being sophisticated. People get the idea that this city is all rich white assholes or that everyone from here is Italian. I'm german and Irish living in Brooklyn and frankly I hate watching most movies and shows because I'm like I've never seem this or that. Its because they usually dont even shoot in the city. Shows like will & grace ,friends and Seinfeld were always shot in studios in California. Everything except outside still building shots are filmed in studios. This city is beautiful but dont expect everything you see in movies and tv. Come see what its really like which is a lot better than they show you on a tv screen! It is indisputably the center of New York City and the New York metropolitan region, holding the seat of city government, and the largest fraction of employment, business, and recreational activities.
Many movies film in and around Manhattan and what your seeing is more than likely a reflection of the makeup there. Though very affluent, it still has a number of diff makeups of ethnicities, but youll def find a lot of caucausians.
