Why does Russell Crowe (Maximus Decimus Meridius) always touch the dirt before g!

Question: I have watched the movie the gladiator many time but I still had that question in my mind why does Russell Crowe touches the dirt before battle. Is that part of touching the dirt true, like back in the days Roman generals touch the dirt because it brought them good luck or something or its just a Hollywood ideas.

Two reasons. 1 The dirt helps soak up the sweat on the hands making it less likrly to drop his sword. 2 Maximus is from a pre-christian Europe. he was touchoing the earth to ask for the help of the ancesters.

1) It looked good
2) Grip (on the sword)
3) Perhaps reaching his ancestors?

Gets the sweat off his hands?

Palms get sweaty when anxious, he touches dirt to dry em off. Same with athletes, i.e. weightlifters & rock climbers.

Back then no one heard of the Bible but there were plenty of religions almost the same as Christianity because Christianity formed around the same time as Islam and Greek and roman religion and even Egyptian religion like set and Isis, they're all pretty much the same from around the same area, the middle east/ Mediterranean.
