It's harmless enough...
They just support the celebrities, it's no different to getting your friends over and watching soccer or basketball. Or watching the MTV awards and the performances.
It also highlights films that look interesting so you can go and see the ones that were big hits that you missed.
We're pathetic voyeurs.

Plus, they probably have nothing better to do.
They like to live vicariously through the lives of celebrities is my guess. I might watch to get a glimpse of Scarlett Johansson's boobs but that's about it.

My mom is 81 years old and the oscars are such a big deal to her. She says it is because she loves to see how the stars dress. She has not seen not one of the nominated movies but she still looks so forward to the show. She reads all the good ragbags ,too. She quotes people and in touch magazine like they are the bible. I think it just gives her something fun to dream about . She kinda lives vicariously thru her favorite stars.
Because a lot of us love and deeply care about movies.
