Judging from this year's Academy Awards, do you feel the Motion Picture Acad!

Question: The selection of motion pictures that the Motion Picture Academy seemed to focus on this year did not appear to be the main stream movies that the rest of us saw. Why? The Academy Award is the premier award of all the award shows out there. Yet they don't seem to represent what the rest of us are looking at. Why such a disconnect?

Is this elitism gone too far? Film snobbery at it's highest?

It's sad you have to look now at the "me too" award shows to find the movies winning awards that the public actually likes and sees in their hometown movie theatres.

I've worked in official capacities in the film industry since 1994, when I had my first job as a grip on a film called "Homage," in which Blythe Danner, Frank Whaley, Sheryl Lee, Danny Nucci and Bruce Davison all should have been nominated for Oscars. This business is as wacky as it gets sometimes.

This year, I have actually seen one of the films nominated, No Country For Old Men, and I loved it. Most years though, I don't even see any of those nominated at all, unless I catch one or two of them on DVD. I couldn't even tell you who won last year for Best Actress, and I couldn't tell you what Best Picture was. And another thing I don't understand is how one movie can get Best Director while another gets Best Picture. I don't understand the Academy's inner workings on that one at all.

Truth is, though, in this world, movies that probably should get financed don't, and movies that should never have drawn a dime from a studio, a private investor or a hedge fund get made and get Oscars. That's just the nature of the biz, my friend. Just ask me; I have taken one of my screenplays and added a budget proposal, a few attachments with track records to the cast, a well-known country recording artist to help with music, and a name actress who wants to try her hand at directing. Will we get financed? Who knows. All I know is it's damn frustrating to see what not only gets financed, but what ends up winning Oscars sometimes.

yes

i totally agree

Are you advocating 'Transformers' for best picture? Its time independent films get their due. Lars and the real girl should be up for best picture.

By your logic Mcdonalds should win a prize for culinary excellence since hey....Big Macs are what the people actually eat.

well a lot of movies only hit major cities and not always in America.

But there is one place all movies must play in before they can even be considered for a Oscar

Los Angelos.

if they dont play in a theatre there, they will never win a oscar.

As for your question,

I havent loved the oscars since 2000 when a terrible movie called American Beauty won the awards that Green Mile deserved.

where the movies preview around the country determines how big a market a movie is going to take.

In larger cities, the nominated movies ran a LONG time; more so this year than others...(Boston) It was easier to see all the nominations before the awards...

It is what it is...

I think oscar films tend to be in the middle, neither crappy seat fillers nor high brow, obscure stuff. Mostly it's just decent films that anyone could 'get'. I don't think it's elitist at all.

I disagree totally. Most popular movies are popular because they regurgetate the same stale garbage that most movie goers want to see. Thats fine, I enjoy popcorn flicks too. But when it comes to awarding people for outstanding art a little originality is expected.

its not just elitism...

its a few movies that happen to be selected rampaging the awards ceremony (much the same way that winehouse took over the grammies)...

its no longer about quality... its about networking and getting your name heard by the big-wigs that run the events....

Ultimately, the problem comes from the fact that with technology on the rise, just about anyone can produce in these medias (ie. garage bands and youtube). There's simply too much art out there for there to be ONE awards ceremony expected to cover it all....

it isn't just the academy, the critics all rate these movies very highly before they are nominated. And frankly I completely agree with them like 95percent of the time. No Country For Old Men was almost unbelievable and There Will Be Blood was one of the best movies I've seen since Crash. And if you say crash was bad you have terrible movie taste. I think they have been choosing great movies, but when they choose them, they have mostly an adult fanbase in mind. Kids are not really likely to see these movies. I'm one of those kids, at 16 I am a complete movie buff I see every movie that is given high ratings. I saw There Will Be Blood for my freakin birthday.
