My nostalgic favorite would have to be Katharine Hepburn. She was so far ahead of her peers -- a post-modern feminist among traditional archetypes, and for that she will always be regarded as one of the best actresses of her time. I grew up watching her old movies, and I know that my ideas about what it meant to be a strong, independent woman were heavily influenced by her personality.
But my overall choice would have to be Meryl Streep. She is a masterful actress, a chameleon. I never feel like I'm watching her perform. She becomes her characters. Think of Sophie's Choice, Out of Africa, the Bridges of Madison County. She brought those characters to life, and she made it look effortless. The ease and naturalness of her performances is why I choose her. Actresses like Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn are hindered by their incredible charisma, because I can never quite forget it's them and not their characters I'm watching.
